A major addition to Sony Ericsson’s family of Walkman phones, the W950i is a slim (106×54x15mm, 112g), ultra-stylish, UMTS-enabled
(3G) device with an impressive 4GB of onboard storage - perfect for music buffs! It also comes complete with a 2.6-inch colour touchscreen, allowing for not-so-simple navigation through music genres, playlists, individual songs or music albums. A little more than a music phone, the W950i also offers relatively fast e-mail and Web browsing and comes with a suite of entertainment applications, making it one of the most highly specified phones in the Sony Ericsson portfolio.
The W950i’s design will turn the heads of the most avid style aficionados. Its thin, sleek and compact form is finished in Mystic Purple (don’t worry, it looks almost black), fingerprint-proof matt with orange accents. The design is strengthened by the keypad being flush with the surface, and orange backlighting that brings the music keys to life in an attractive, yet practical way. Those with larger fingers will struggle with the tiny keyboard, though, and we even had trouble sending coherent SMSs and e-mails.
The biggest selling feature of the W950i is its music capabilities. In fact, you shouldn’t even consider the phone unless you want to take advantage of its copious storage space (there are much better phones for keeping in touch with the office). The W950i has the functionality and sound quality of an equivalent standalone device, and its 4GB storage can accommodate around 4000 songs. The sound quality, delivered via the matching high quality headphones, makes listening to music a real pleasure. There’s even a new graphic-rich interface on the Walkman player that lets you navigate your music library by song, artist or playlist, and it’s now possible to search visually by browsing through album covers using the stylus and touchscreen.
