Sony Ericsson W850 Walkman Slider Review

November 28th, 2006 · No Comments

The W850 is a funny looking device, and whether it appears attractive will really depend on your Sony Ericsson W850.jpgpersonal preference. Some user groups even voted the W850 to be the worst looking Sony Ericsson device ever. On top of graphite black, there is also a white model available, which may hide the design features that you don’t like. The catchiest part of its design is the striking orange bar button on the front of the handset underneath the Walkman logo. This orange bar works as a shortcut key to the Walkman screen. The W850 looks heavy, and it isn’t small either, measuring 98mm x 47mm x 21mm (3.86" x 1.85" x 0.83") and weighing 116g (4.09oz). The battery cover on the back of the phone is textured with tiny little triangular indentations to make the phone less slippery. On the back, you will also find the company logo, the Walkman logo, the speaker grille holes, and the camera.

The power button is located on top of the handset, and shutter and volume keys are on the side. The soft keys under the mirror framed screen are very large and easy to press. The d-pad is formed by four lights around a Play/Pause button. Because of the hard plastic, the d-pad is actually quite hard to press, something that the company has not addressed despite explicit feedback generated from its prototypes. The other four shortcut keys are relatively small in size, but they are all reasonably accessible.

Sliding open the phone will reveal the numeric keypad. The top row of the keypad is difficult to use because of the thickness of the upper half of the slide. Nokia has avoided this problem on the upcoming N95, where the upper component of the slide is made as thin as possible. Even with sufficient tactile feedback and appropriate button size, the keypad still falls short of impressing us. It is a pain to reach up for the d-pad, requiring you to squeeze your finger up to the the directional keys. Backlighting is not a problem, and the light violet color looks very attractive in the dark. Notice that the backlight for the keys on the upper slide changes to orange when Walkman mode is on; this is a bit gimmicky, but is a potent marketing maneuver.
