One of the best features of today’s smart devices is that they let you browse the Web on the go.
Sadly, though, most smartphones come with pretty weak browsers; Internet Explorer Mobile is one good example. IEM does the job well enough, but it looks and feels a little stripped-down. But Opera Software lets you bypass your phone’s built-in browser with Opera 8.6 for Mobile, a slick $24 (direct) application that works on Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices (either 2003 or 5.0). There’s also a version for Windows Smartphone 2003. Curiously, Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone users are out of luck for the time being, leaving Motorola Q and T-Mobile Dash owners without a suitable browser replacement.
Don’t confuse Opera 8.6 for Windows Mobile with Opera Mini 2.0, which is Opera Software’s free browser for WAP-enabled feature phones and which doesn’t work on Windows Mobile devices. If you have a smartphone, you’ll need to purchase Opera 8.6 for Mobile instead. I tested the browser on a T-Mobile MDA, which has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
